Rock Garden

Grapevine Canyon — This is one of the largest of the southside canyons. There is usually water in both arms and a generous stream in the lower channel. The double spring on the east slope is reliable; just below, it drops off over a 200 foot cliff. Look for the agave pit on the south slope above the trail crossing the east fork.

Trails — Tonto Trail east to Cottonwood Creek; west to Boulder Creek reaches South Kaibab Trail.

Routes — There should be one direct from Grandview Point that may require a bit of climbing. Also, various reports of the difficulty descending the streambed to the river; I really must try this sometime.

1987 May - Second night of Grandview to Kaibab solo.

2003 April - The very long day with Alessio. Maximum water carry from Grapevine to uncertain spring at Lonetree. Water flowing in east fork; west fork dry but a nice overhang here. One nice shady rock on the west side slope. Poorwill roosting at trailside - looks just like a gray rock when completely still.
